What is English about?

At Palmer Secondary School, English Literature involves exploring diverse texts (fiction, non-fiction, poetry, drama) to understand themes, cultures, and periods, developing critical thinking, strong reading/writing skills, and creative expression, often through in-depth study of specific authors or genres, with advanced options like AP English in the Incentive Program. Students analyze literature, improve their writing (composition), and build overall communication abilities

What do they do in class?

Not only will the students get to write different types of texts but also they will have the chance to become acquainted with a variety of literature during the time they are engaged in the English classes. If someone belongs to the ninth-grade of Ms. Berda's class, then short stories will be part of his/her curriculum. Moreover, a vocabulary unit will be included in which through the various exercises and activities, the students will learn new words. Consequently, the tales' comprehension will be one of the outcomes along with the students' vocabulary expansion. Moreover, there will be discussions held regarding the main themes and characters in the tales. The interaction during these discussions turns not only the learning process into a fun activity but it also urges you to delve into the stories more profoundly. In addition, the exchange of ideas within the group may result in discovering new angles and thus the reading becomes more pleasurable.

My comment

In English 8-9, I've gone through some ups and downs, but it's mostly an interesting subject. Some pros of it are the teacher mostly dont give out tons of tests like in math because it  takes a while to get through a unit. Also, it teaches you needed grammar and punctuation for future job applications and other stuff. Overall, English can have some cons, but it's most likely the most useful subject you can have if you want to be in an office job or just send emails to bosses and job applications.

grades and percentages.

Vancouver’s curriculum for grade 8 includes a combination of assignments, quizzes, and tests for determining your marks. The midterms and finals are not the most significant part of the evaluation, they are only about 15% each. The majority of your score, approximately 70%, is composed of short quizzes, unit tests, and assignments. This implies that you cannot only depend on the major tests to increase your mark. Do your regular homework and projects punctually. If you are organized with your studies, participate in class and contribute; you will not only get a higher grade but also a clearer comprehension of the subject. Richmond is one of the areas where instead of letter grades or percentage for midterms and final report cards, a proficiency scale is used for students in grades 8 and 9. The proficiency scale is used only for grades 10 to 12. These grades indicate your level of understanding of the subject. You can click                          to see what each level of the scale signifies.
