What is English about?
Palmer Secondary School’s English program helps students make their skills in reading, writing, speaking, and thinking better. Students read a lot of types of texts, such as stories, poems, plays, and media, to understand different POV's and to share their ideas clearly. The program gives students chances to be smart by doing writing and class discussions. It also helps them become more confident in using their language in everyday life. Overall, English is about making new ideas, understanding people and the world around us, and learning how to make ourselfs clear and in meaningful ways.
What do they do in class?
In English class, students work on different types of writing and read a variety of books. If you have Ms. Berda in grade 9, you’ll do a short story unit. This unit is based on a book with lots of short stories that you’ll read and write about. There’s also a vocab unit that helps you build your vocabulary through different exercises and activities. By the end of the course, you’ll have a better understanding of the stories and a stronger vocabulary. You’ll also take part in class discussions to talk about the themes and characters. Working together in these talks makes learning more interesting and helps you think more deeply about the stories. Sharing ideas with classmates can also give you new perspectives and make reading even more enjoyable.

My comment
In English 8-9, I've gone through some ups and downs, but it's mostly an interesting subject. Some pros of it are the teacher mostly dont give out tons of tests like in math because it takes a while to get through a unit. Also, it teaches you needed grammar and punctuation for future job applications and other stuff. Overall, English can have some cons, but it's most likely the most useful subject you can have if you want to be in an office job or just send emails to bosses and job applications.
What do students learn
Students learn vocab units, short stories, and writing. In the vocab unit you learn 10 new words each time. When you learn them, you have to get the definitions of them and other versions of the word. At the end of every 2 vocab units, there is a vocab unit test. At the sixth vocab part, instead of words, we learn prefixes and suffixes. In the short story unit, you read and learn about short stories, and write reflections about them.
grades and percentages.
In Vancouver’s grade 8 curriculum, your marks come from a mix of assignments, quizzes, and tests. Midterms and finals aren’t the biggest part they’re only about 15% each. Most of your grade, around 70%, comes from smaller quizzes, unit tests, and assignments. This means you can’t just rely on big tests to boost your mark. Doing your homework and projects regularly is really important. If you stay on top of your work and take part in class, you’ll do better overall and understand the material more clearly. In areas like Richmond, instead of using letter grades or percentages for midterms and final report cards, schools use a proficiency scale for grade 8 and 9. they only ever use letter grades for grades 10-12. These grades show how well you understand the subject. You can click to see what each level on the scale means.
