What is Math?

Math is an expansive discipline that has broad ties to a variety of career and academic tracks. It concentrates on structure, quantity, space and change, using logical activation to see something of numbers, shapes and relationships. Math has expanded from simple counting to complex systems and is key in science, technology and finance. It is a way for us to companion with reality, find patterns, conceive explanations and demonstrate truths in everything from what we call algebra and geometry, calculus and statistics. Even if you don’t like it, math is one of the most important subject that is important for future education.

What do Palmer students do in math?

At Palmer Secondary, students work in standard math courses but also have better options, especially in the Incentive Program, where they do Grades 8-10 Math in two years, making it possible for advanced studies like Enriched Math 11 in Grade 10, plus participation in math contests and clubs. In class, they cover more than 12 units in one semester. After each unit, you have a unit test that's worth approximately 20% of your grade. Once you reach halfway of your semester of math, you have a midterm test which can boost your grade a lot. At the end of the semester, you have the final exam that's worth more than 25% of your grade! In conclusion, math students cover a lot of  subjects in just one semester!

What do students learn in Math?

At Palmer Secondary in Richmond, BC, students learn core math concepts like number operations, algebra (linear functions, polynomials), trigonometry, data analysis, and financial literacy, focusing on problem solving, communication, and exploring different stuff, which develops from Grade 9 to more advanced levels like Foundations & Pre Calculus 10. They develop spatial sense, unit conversions, and try out complex reasoning, with opportunities through clubs for enrichment in math competitions.  To graduate Palmer Secondary in BC, you need Math 10 Foundations of Math & Pre-Calculus (or equivalent), plus overall 80 credits and literacy/numeracy assessments, but the specific type depends on your future path, with Grade 10 math as a requirement, leading to options like Pre-Calculus or Foundations 11/12 for post-secondary, while pathways also exist for trades/workforce with different Grades.

What is my comment for Math?

I personally don't really like math but I'm starting to understand it and enjoy it more throughout the years. For people who don't enjoy math, I would recommend you to just try your hardest and push through until the end  because someday it will definitely be worth it. In my math 8 year, I really struggled because it was a very big transition from grade 7 to 8. This means that my old teachers didn't really get me ready for high school math. In grade 9, I started to get the hang of it and do really well on my tests and projects. My advice for anyone transitioning to grade 8 math, I would recommend them to work and practice ahead of time during summer break in order to be ready for what's coming ahead.
